HDMI connection not working

I have a Toshiba satellite L55t-A5253 laptop. It has 1 hdmi port. I have tried for hours to connect the laptop to my Samsung tv. I keep getting no signal. I have tried to go into the screen settings and it only shows 1 monitor. The TV won't show when plugged in. What am I doing wrong any help would be great. I've done the fn + f5, went into setting and tried to manual find it and nothing.

Do you have to go into your laptop video settings to select the correct output and/or resolution? What is your OS?
