HDMI Splitter with receiver, tv, and projector

I have a receiver, a tv and a projector, I assumed I could hook them up with an HDMI splitter, but we are on our second splitter with no results. We have a cable box and dvd player going into the reciever, we can individually hook up tv and projector and they work just fine, is there a step or configuration I am missing?

Are the splitters you tried passive?
You need an active HDMI distribution amplifier.
The HDMI cables you use make a difference too.
The order you turn on the components of the system can make a difference.
Sometimes switching to another input and back helps.

How do I know if the splitter is passive? No matter how we hook it up, only one device will work. My husband THINKS he was getting signal to both, but the screen was distorted, small blue stripe across instead of blank (on projector) while tv had full working signal.
