Headphone plugged in using Splitter; Mic not working

I just got myself a female to 2 male splitter yesterday for my pc because I want to use the mic on the audio chord. The audio has always been working fine on the pc, and the mic works on an old laptop that had 2 audio jacks(1 in 1 out), but somehow the mic does not work at all on the pc. The mic was detected by Realtek audio manager, yet no input is picked up by the mic. The HD audio cable is seated properly on the motherboard, so I have absolutely no idea what is wrong.

Test with another system, make sure the mic is set as an input device in Windows, exchange the cable if none of that works.
