Help fixing monitor

I have a dell monitor I'm trying to hook it up to a toshiba laptop. The screen went out in the laptop so i can't see anything . I've tried fn+f5 . I've tried shutting the laptop to make the screen the default . Neither one works .

Are you sure it is the screen that doesn't work on the laptop and not the graphics card/GPU? If that has gone, you won't get it to work no matter the display.

I used to have it hooked up to a monitor and it worked . It says power energy mode . Or something like that.!
