Help Laptop for College age son

My son, freshman in college is currently using a "borrowed" laptop. I need to get him one, but have been waiting for the whole haswell thing to play out. If we had to we could wait til Christmas (but would prefer to buy now).

1. What is your budget?
<1000 (would frankly like to be around 700)

2. What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
Around 14"
3. What screen resolution do you want?
I guess 900?

4. Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Lightweight/Ultrabook
5. How much battery life do you need?
Long (6 hours or more)

6. Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?

7. What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo/Video editing, Etc.)
Typical college kid (non-engineering)

8. How much storage (Hard Drive capacity) do you need?
Not a high priority (if I need to I would buy additional after-market storage)

If you want durable + battery life take a look at lenovo's thinkpad t series. I think the current ones are still 3rd gen, although they are starting to post 4th gen cpu versions on the site
