I have laptop from a friend which is the Acer Aspire 5732z.
He gave it to me to remove malware and viruses but there were so many that I chose to do a clean install of Windows 7.
Everytime I do a clean install eveything works fine except the Windows Update which gets stuck at "Checking for Updates" forever with almost 50% constant CPU usage of its process.
I tried various methods to resolve it by searching the web but nothing works.
This is my 4th clean install, driver updating and essential app installation and still Windows Update refuses to work.
I used 3 different ISO images already.

Pls help!

Did you update the upadater? If not here is the link to give it a try. https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/kb/949104 ,I did both around the same time so I am not quite sure which one worked for me so now when I fix a PC and need to reinstall window7 I just run both. Make sure your internet is shut off when doing the first one (3102810) shut it of then restart your PC, make sure its does not reconnect on start-up, unplug LAN cable if you have then restart, then run update 3102810, then update the updater.(949104)

sounds like your not disconnecting from net, mine did the same thing until I unhooked internet (both cable and Wi-Fi, also unchecked the box thats says "connect on start-up, restarted the pc, then ran that update and it should work right away. should not take anytime to start. I know you prob are doing it right but thats what it sounds like.
make sure its not searching while doing update, try turning off updates, unhook net and restart.

I ran that kb3102810 file, did the restart of windows when it told me to, ran the search for windows updates using windows updates which found just over 200 updates about 15 minutes after i started the search. this was done on a customer's dual core i5 laptop yesterday only to find out I have to redo it as the hard drive is dying.

I tried the above suggestions here with some success but it would still not DL everything. Someone at another forum posted this and it worked.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-update/windows-7-update-solution/f39a65fa-9d10-42e7-9bc0-7f5096b36d0c?auth=1

This topic came up on Security Now last week, coincidentally. While I still think something's wrong with your drive because you seem to have more than just Update issues, there's a lot of people having trouble getting updates started on a clean install.

Someone with a reputation for these things on an MS Forum posted what people describe as the definitive guide for performing a clean Win7 OS install, and it seems to work for most people. He walks you through it step by step here. I'll try this myself soon on this charity PC I need to setup. After performing the procedure below, you should be able to save time and do the Win7 SP1 Convenience Rollup (KB3125574) instead of letting Windows Update download 200+ updates if you want.

I notice he recommends NOT using automatic updates. I never have on my Win7 systems. I've always had it prompt me to download and I install it when good and ready, usually 2 weeks after they're released.

Windows 7 Update solution:

We emphasize that for this to work, you must follow exactly as this describes.

There are two main types of Windows 7 installations: 32 bit or 64 bit. You need to know what is installed in your computer. Click the Start globe, type system in the box. Choose System information in the list. The techie shorthand for 32 bit is x86 and for 64 bit is x64

1. Start Windows Update and change the Setting to Never check for updates. Close the Windows Update window. Some members recommend you return the setting to what ever you used before this operation, after you complete Windows Update. IF you do leave the setting at NEVER, Windows Update will no longer be automatic. From this point onwards, you are responsible for starting and installing updates. We recommend you do that a few days following the 2nd Tuesday each month.

2. Restart your computer.

3. The process starts by ensuring that there is nothing running that will prevent the update from working properly. Click on the Start globe and type services into the text box. Click on Services in the list that pops up. In the window that then pops up (its alphabetic), find Windows Update. Right-click on it (left-click if your mouse is set for left-handers) and choose Stop.

4. You are now going to download and install either one or two updates manually. In most cases only the first (KB3172605) of these is needed. If that produces a result that says the update is not appropriate for you computer, you need to first install the 2nd of these (KB3020369), then install the first (KB3172605). Choose the one that is for your machine -- 32 bit (X86) or 64 bit (X64).

KB3172605:

32 bit

https://download.microsoft.com/download ... 05-x86.msu

64 bit

https://download.microsoft.com/download ... 05-x64.msu

KB3020369:

32 bit

https://download.microsoft.com/download ... 69-x86.msu

64 bit

https://download.microsoft.com/download ... 69-x64.msu

5. After restarting your computer, wait about 10 minutes until Windows Update completes its tasks. Do not use the computer for any other purpose during this wait period.

6. Start Windows Update. It will take only a few minutes (unless, of course it has been many months since the last update) to come up with a list and download the updates you select. The process is quite normal as it always was from this point onward.

If your computer has not been updated for a long time, it may take longer.

I used the Rollup which worked but there was still about 70 more updates.

Win7 SP1 Convenience Rollup (you need to use IE to access this site):

All's A-OK now

First install new update agent.
Install manual install of NETframework 4.6.1
Later check in services if BITS is running.

SVCHOST.EXE being run by SYSTEM that is using 50% or more CPU and a huge chunk (73%) of memory. So, go to Windows Update in Control Panel and tell it to never look for updates.
Then back to Task Manager and KILL (stop) the big fat 50% process you just found.

MS has produced a fix (2 KB patches) that you cannot ordinarily get to without an update. There is a way to download those 2 KB files, butthen...
You cannot ordinarily install them without using WUSA (the Windows Update Stand-Alone installer). And if you try to use it to install the fixes, WUSA will first begin another 48 hour search for updates before installing anything. This is a circular trap !

1. Go to the following link to download Windows6.1-KB3102810-x64.msu
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=49540
Use the SAVE option, DO NOT RUN IT!

2. Go to the following link to download Windows6.1-KB3112343-x64.msu
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=50023
Use the SAVE option, DO NOT RUN IT!

3. Look for these two files in your DOWNLOADS folder. Copy them to your DESKTOP.
Now to install them, you must use the StandAlone installer, WUSA, BUTyou must FORCE IT to simply do it without searching forever. Here is how:

First, copy the following line exactly and completely:
4. "C:\Users\Edmund\Desktop\windows6.1-kb3102810-x64.msu" /wuforce
Note that EDMUND is your Log in NAME that you have. (admin)

5. Click the Start (Globe);

6. Click in the Search Programs And Files box;

7. Type: RUN

(make sure you are running as Administrator)

8. Click on the RUN at the top, then Right Click on it, and select PASTE;

9. Change the Edmund to whatever your USER name is;

10. Hit ENTER and let it roll. After the install is done, then...

Copy the following line exactly:

11. "C:\Users\Edmund\Desktop\windows6.1-kb3112343-x64.msu" /wuforce

12. Click the Start Globe;

13. Click in the Search Programs And Files box;

14. Type: RUN
(make sure you are running as Administrator)

15. Click on the RUN at the top, then Right Click on it, and select PASTE;

16. Change the Edmund to whatever your USER name is;

17. Hit ENTER and let it roll again. After that install is done, RESTART your computer.

You should now be able to setup the UPDATEs in Control Panel and Search For Updates. Within about 10 minutes or less, you should have a huge list of KBs to download and install. Sometimes this will take time,but if the Manual KB install works, so should the search for updates.. let it sit while you go to bed. Be sure to turn OFF power saving items such as shut down to NEVER in control panel. I set mine to notify of found updates. You may need to RESTART BITS in services. !!!!!

I individually downloaded the following patches from Microsoft but after downloading them all I disconnected and disabled internet connection while installing them

3102810
3050265
3065987
3135445
3161664
3020369
3172605
3138612

The above updates are for 64 bit windows 7
I had to reboot after some of them were installed and I had to be sure windows was unable to reconnect to the Internet.

I then reconnected to the Internet after a reboot then I checked the progress of windows update, and over 170 updates were being queued for updates. I then set up automatic updates

Problem solved
