Have an LG 55LM6700 3D Smart TV, an LG BP620 Blu-ray player, Sony STRDH720 receiver and a Cox digital cable box. The TV and receiver are both ARC enabled and I have had them connected with HDMI 1.4 hi speed cables. We were getting sound thru the receiver and external speakers when watching TV, but had to switch to TV speaker to get any sound when using applications like Netflix or Amazon. I asked LG about this, as I thouhg with the ARC connections, the TV would send the sound back to the receiver. They said that is not possible with ARC, that I would need an optical cable from the TV to the receiver. Well, I didn't think that was correct, but tried it anyway, and got no sound through the optical cable. I tried different inputs, turned off the TV sound,. etc Now we are back to the old way and having to watch Netflix, Amazon, etc movies with the TV sound, which is not very good. What connections should I be using to have all sound go to the external speakers through the receiver? I would appreciate any help you can give me, as neither Sony or LG were any help.

if arc works with normal tv channels im guessing its a technical problem with the software used to run the netflix apps etc on the telly since you said LG said its not supported with them.

is your tellys firmware all up to date?

i am also assuming that when ARC is enabled then optical output is disabled, try disabling ARC and enabling optical again on telly and receiver.

As I said in my original question, I did connect an optical cable and then got no sound.

You are correct that ARC was designed to carry the audio from your TV back to the receiver without an additional cable. It needs to be activated in both the receiver and TV. The optical output should work as well. Make sure you have assigned the optical in on the receiver to the input you want to use. Also check the TV menu for any settings in the audio menu.

I would prefer to use the ARC for fewer cords, but can't seem to make it work. I have ARC enabled on the TV, the sound to TV speakers turned off. I also enabled HDMI control on the receiver. That is all that is needed per the manuals. I still get no sound when using Netflix or any other applications on the "Smart TV"
