Help with laptop

I have an Dell laptop, Windows 8. I turned my laptop on while the charger is plugged in, it comes on like it's starting up like normal but the screen is just black. The mouse still works and shows on the screen and I can press the F8 button and it shows the options to project to a connected screen but when I exit out of that it's still blank/ black.

Do a hard reset first, remove the battery and AC adapter then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds then see if it will load normally. If it will not connect an external monitor and check if you'll get any display from it and if you do press the Windows key + P at the same time and select Display Only or Disconnect projector and press Enter.

try going into safemode to see if it appears somewhat normal as sounds like a video driver issue. try a system restore to before this problem started as maybe an updated caused this problem.
