You wrote this last October,

"This was an Atari 2600 game... a side scrolling shooter like super
cobra kinda, but you couldn't drop bombs, you just shot at enemies
which appeared in "waves" of five at a time. When you destroyed the
fifth enemy, it "exploded" into five new, different enemies, and when
you destroyed the last of that one, it would "explode" into five new,
different enemies and so on. There was also a level where you had to
"steer" your ship through a maze to dock on the "mother ship"
which was on the other side. THanks."

I was playing around with a 2600 emulator on my PDA and found that
game in my ROM list.

UFO PATROL

What a great game! As far as 2600 games go, it ranks with the best of
the best imo.
About the only info I've found on it is that it's made by Quell and
was in PAL format. Did you find an NTSC version?

I most certainly DID find an nTSC conversion. It's been a while, and I
have a LOT of cartridges in the basement (you did see the pics of the
arcade I have downstars right/??) - I'm not sure, but I BELIEVE the
game that you were referring to is a canadian cartridge that was sold
in the Canadian department store chain, ZELLER'S. What they would do is
release ROMS from other game companies like ACTIVISION and give them
different names. One of these I think was called "Laser volley" which
was a copy of activision's "Laser gates"... and then of course there
was UFO PATROL as you have pointed out... no wonder I didn't know what
game this was since it was an overseas title.
