Let me start of saying I'm sorry if i posted this question in the wrong spot, or if it has already been answered multiple times. I read a vast amount of forums, but usually don't post questions.

I built a htpc that was overkill. It has a intel i5, 16GB of ram, samsung ssd 840 250gb, etc. I'm now looking to make my current htpc my main system. I would like to add a home sever, and multiple mini systems throughout the house. I'm cheap, but I'm willing to spend money if necessary. I also believe quality products will be cheaper in the long run.

So finally to my questions, how much would a home server cost me? It can be in a ugly case, but i want it to perform. If you have any builds in mind, please let me know, or post a link. Second question, what would be a cheap, but reliable option to hook up to my tv's? Asus Chromebox? Intel Nuc? Or anything else?

If you have nothing beneficial to say, please keep it to yourself. This is a learning process for me and others. If you've seen this question posted before, please provide a link.

Thanks,

Jordan

The i3 will do just fine but since you have a cooler lying around use that cooler to overclock this pentium.Overclocked, this pentium will be better than the i3. I was wondering if you meant $300 without the stuff you have so this will be good. You could drop the ssd if you don't really want fast file transfers but from the word FAST you probably want it. If you don't feel safe in overclocking view tom'e guide with this processsor or just drop the ssd and get an i3 or cheap 2nd or 3rd gen i5.

$200 will land you in the low-end zone even for an HTPC. You could go with a cheaper power supply that is non modular but with that small space I just went with a full...

Thanks for the response Intel Celeron.

I would like to keep my budget around $300 for the server if possible. I am willing to spend more if necessary. I do have a fractal design arc midi mid-tower, corsair cx430, and a cooler master s524 laying around that I'm willing to use. I only live with my girlfriend, so i would require at least two streams. I would like to leave a little room for growth.

For the mini htpc I would like to spend $200 per system. I don't know if this is possible. All they need to do is play HD online media, and HD medai off the home server.

Thanks,

Jordan

Also would the intel i3 be the smartest option for the home server? I know it's a little more expensive than other options, but it seems like it would be pretty energy efficient. Or is the i3 overkill?

I've been researching mini pc solutions, and i ran across the Minix NEO X8-H for $170 on amazon. Does anyone have any experience with this device? Also can you connect to a home server with it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can squeeze out more dollars out of this build to reach the $300 zone. I know an APU is overkill for an HTPC so You could go intel with the HTPC build.
