Hook up home theater system to direct tv with Hdmi cable

Cannot figure out how to connect home theater system to direct tv to television. Have Hdmi cable

What model is the TV and home theater system ?

If your Home Theatre System only has RCA connectors then you will need an adapter similar to this

Then you can connect the "optical out" or "digital out" from your TV to the converter and then connect the 6 rca leads from the converter to your Home Theatre System.
This should give you 5.1 surround
