Hook up laptop to monitor...

I have a dell latitude laptop for school and im looking to connect it to a big monitor. I'm considering if i should shell out the money for a docking station for the following reasons: 1. I take my laptop to class so i would be easier to just undock it and leave everything plugged into the docking station. 2. my laptop only has a vga connection and the docking station for my laptop has a dvi, would that make the picture better? anywho the docking station is 100, almost as much as the monitor im looking at. Think its worth it?

TL;DR: Should i buy a docking station or just hook monitor and keyboard to laptop itself

Using VGA should be fine. I would only shell out money on a docking station for the DVI if for some reason it looks bad.
