How can I tell if a computer is a good buy if there are no reviews or ratings?

Custom PCs are a better option all the way, even if the PC is a good deal you will have problems upgrading in the future or finding replacement parts incase something fails and the way prebuild PCs are build they usually are on static pressure and would gather dust and debre like a vacuum.

Nowadays PC building is easier then legos, time and patience is the key everything from furniture to home lightbulbs fans ect everything has to be assembled by you and in the process you might learn taking care of your PC and make it last longer. If you dont have time a supplier or shopkeeper can build it for you for a small fee.

If I am not mistaken, HP Pavillion 17-g192dx is a laptop.
$479 does not seem out of line.

You should be able to find laptop reviews.
That unit does not have a ssd which I consider essential.
You usually can replace a hard drive with your own ssd.

Thanks for the offer. I am in Colorado and not a computer geek. What is very important to me is having local tech support 24/7. The only reason I am looking at a new computer is that we are getting the fastest Internet in the country and my old computer won't be fast enough for it. Don't game nor do anything fancy with the computer.

For $479 it is fine. While a SSD (solid state drive) is faster than a traditional hard drive when it comes to read / write speeds, it is not exactly "essential" since laptop have existed long before SSDs were available. A traditional hard drive is still fine for most people especially if you want high storage capacity at a relatively inexpensive price.

I assume you mean NexLight. I live in your area too. ;-)

That Laptop is a fine laptop. Nothing fancy, but not garbage either.

This laptop has wireless N and real world wireless N Speeds are good if you hit 60/mbps, Far shy of the rated speeds for Nextlight. If you are coming from Comcast you won't likely see any better performance out of it on a Per-PC basis, but it could easily support 4 HD Netflix Streams at once, something Comcast just can't do well.

I am available locally, should you need any help or advice. Let me know.

Thanks loads. Actually I forgot I wrote this. I only use the computer for researching things, emails, online kindle, spreadsheets, etc. Don't need anything fancy. And what other decent computer can you get for $400...which is what Best Buy will sell it to me for. I have Roku on my smart tv so will probably use Hulu with Starz added and indoor antennas for all 3 of my tv's for local channels. Also have Windows 7 which I really like. However I better learn and get used to Windows 10 and a new computer before I have to deal with a new way of getting all my tech up and running. So is what you are saying is that this particular computer is not going to get the 100mgs from Nextlight? Why is that? Actually my computer is 6 years old and the only reason I was planning to replace it is to get a faster speed especially for streaming which I take it will go through Roku. Anyway...who knows when we will ever get Nextlight. Even though they are in our area, I don't see any movement around here.

I have done quite a bit of research on laptops. If I could afford an ASUS that is what I would buy. Acer is made of plastic and has some pretty poor reviews. Also the HP has 1TB and the Acer has a smaller screen and only 256GB. The situation is that by the time I pay for 3 years protection and tech support, having my old computer stuff transferred and pay the nominal fee for Office, that's another $500. Gotta watch my pennies. So if you are telling me I am not going to get the speed from the HP I am looking for then I probably won't buy another computer. I have all HP equipment and have never had a problem with any of it.

What you won't get from that HP that you get from Acer is the GTX 940M and SSD. Yes the HP has 1TB HDD but the Acer has SSD.

Wow, you HP fanboy.
HP is like apple, they are focusing on everything except performance.

So choose, better performance or better build quality?

Hi again!
Was waiting to see reviews from people who bought the HP 17-192dx and they weren't good. So what do you recommend that is fast enough to work with Nextlight? I was told the laptop I was looking at was only rated for 60mgs when I would be paying for 1,000 and it would not work for wireless. I can't go over my budget which I am hoping is less than $600. As a matter of fact much less than $600. What are your suggestions? A 15" screen is ok.. What I was told before was to get 8 mgs ram, i.5, and 1 T.

If you are getting 1000mpbs, and want to utilize them, no WiFi will be any good. But - any decent computer will be able to utilize them over Ethetnet, so you better set your priority first.

Your criteria for choosing a laptop is like "I have new beautiful garage door, and my Corolla no longer can use it, so I am looking for a Ferrari but at Corolla price"...
