Vga connectors do not carry audio signals and it is not possible to get sound to the projector. I suppose you could use speakers or buy a hdmi to dvi-d cable to play sound if the projector has a dvi port.

I realize that the HDMI doesn't carry the audio but for some reason when I plug it in it mutes the sound from the audio output both on the computer and and audio output to ear phones or external speaker.

I had a similar issue, laptop speakers are usually very cheap soundcards. I solved it by using an external Bluetooth speaker. Got it from a Chinese store. Maybe this will work for you?

Thanks. Actually I purchases a HDMI - VGA (about $50) converter which works fine.
