How do I get 5.1 surround sound from my laptop, to tv, to Visio soundbar?

Check that the laptop is configured to output in surround sound via HDMI.
Check the the TV audio menu is configured to output in surround sound.
Check that the content you are playing is in digital surround sound.
Try different surround settings in the soundbar.
Most movies don't use surround sound continually so to check the set up use the test noise generated in the laptop to make sure that it works.
