Welcome to Tom’s Guide, Slpj8008. You can always post your questions and answers here. Just make sure you read the forum rules/styling posts on whatever category you fall into. Make sure to be specific with what you’re speaking.

========================================================

There are various apps that let you universally control your TV with a Smart Remote, and I recommend Peel TV Remote. In my opinion, it’s the best app to use to let you control your TV. Just download the app in your Samsung Galaxy J7 in the Play Store, set it up, then follow a few instructions in your Element TV, (best if it’s a smart TV), and you’re done setting it up! If not, use other Smart TV Remotes, just look up working apps in the Play Store app.

If your TV cannot connect, mainly because it’s not a Smart TV or for any other reason, then you cannot use this feature.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How do I know if my TV is a Smart TV?
A: Does it include any smart apps like Netflix or YouTube? Supported Bluetooth? Any other Smart TV Feature? If neither, then your TV is probably an older version and may not/does not support foreign connections.

Q: Does it have to be Android?
A: No, you can use supported apps on devices like iOS (iPhone, iPad, etc.) to connect.

Q: Is the setup safe?
A: If both the app and TV Remote setup are safe, then yes, the overall setup should be safe.

HOPE THIS HELPS! :)

Actually, you can't use that device as a remote.

Why you may ask? Well you need a device with an IR Blaster. That particular phone doesn't have one, making it not able to work as a remote.

The specs (specifications) for this device can be found here... https://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_j7-7185.php or you can look it up on the Samsung site as well.

Now if you have another phone that actually has an IR Blaster, you can use that, or you will need just a regular remote.

And if you wish to know what an IR Blaster is, you can visit here... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrared_blaster

But can’t you also connect the phone to the TV as a controller with tv Remote apps? I use it most of the time, and it’s convenient.

Not without the phone having the ability to act as a remote.

You know that little red light at the end of your remote (turns red when using like changing channels, etc.) which is what I am referring to above. If your phone can't do that, then it can't act as a remote.

Now there may be apps out there that will not act as a remote, but give the app access to your phone and TV and through the app itself control both. But that would require that the app be able to also access the TV. Which then wouldn't be a remote. And then said TV would also have to be accessible through the app itself.

Whole different set of rules there and not a remote.
