I have a Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5134. I'd like to know if there is anything I can do to upgrade my speed? I don't know much about computers. Or are there any other laptop choices under $500, that would make playing The Sims 3 and/or 4 and other similar gameplay faster. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

While you can upgrade the RAM and install a SSD, that will not improve game performance. Your laptop has an AMD E-240 which is a single core APU with the integrated Radeon HD 6310 graphics core. The AMD E-240 was considered weak even when it was new. There is no real reason to dump money into that laptop, it is best to buy a new one.

I recommend the ThinkPad E555 which comes standard with the dual core A6-7000 APU with the Radeon R4 (Kaveri) graphics core for $455 + tax. It will be a big improvement to what you have, but I recommend you upgrade to the quad core A8-7100 with the slightly more powerful Radeon R5 (Kaveri) graphics core which will bring the price to $484 + tax.

It only comes with 4GB of RAM, but it should be good enough until you can afford to install another stick of 4GB RAM. You can order the laptop with 8GB of RAM, but that adds $80 to the price tag. You can buy the following stick of 4GB for $30 and install it yourself.
