How does one secure his home network and server?

I am thinking of buying a server. This server will host files for myself and others specified. It also run game-servers for:

• 
  TF2
  Vanilla Minecraft
  Modded Minecraft

I will also host a Steam Trade Bot and multiple minecraft technic modpacks. I would like to check measures for securing my network before even thinking about buying this server and I would also like to check measures for securing the server itself.

The operating system I will use will either be Ubuntu Server or CentOS.
