Hey guys,

I'm going to be a freshmen in college this year studying engineering. I am currently laptop hunting. I want something small, light, and has great battery life. I came across this laptop.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834214204&nm_mc=OTC-C173T&cm_mmc=OTC-C173T-_-Notebooks-_-Toshiba-_-34214204

It appears I have everything I want. The reviews rave about it. The battery life is supposedly amazing. It weighs only three pounds and has a screen size that I like.

I am worried about how it is only dual core though. Is that a big deal?

Also, why is it so expensive? This laptop has a bigger screen and better processor and is less money. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834215037

AMD Phenom II X4 N970 Quad Core review
Intel Core i5-2410M Dual Core review

In the big, big CPU benchmark list: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html
Phenom II X4 N970 is ranked #91 and Core i5-2410M is ranked #33.
There are some surprised in that chart - like how the C2Q Q6600 desktop CPU is ranked #56 while the i5-2410M is @ #33

If you compare the N970 & i5-2410M - check the boxes and use the Restrict button - you'll see that the N970 almost catches up (but does not pass the 2410M) on the Cinebench R10 32Bit Multi-core benchmark.
Hello kingneptune117;

As you get into the smaller thin and light notebooks they tend to get more expensive for the same level of performance. It's takes more specialized engineering to cram stuff into the smaller space and more experienced & skilled techs to assemble.
Business class notebooks like the Portege also tend to cost more than the consumer notebook like the Acer Aspire AS5552G.

The dual core i5-2410M has more CPU power than the quad core N970.
Passmark CPU benchmark scores:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
AMD Phenom II N970 Quad-Core = 2815
Intel Core i5-2410M @ 2.30GHz = 3309

The TOSHIBA Portege R835 is an excellent option for reasonably powerful notebook in a very portable package.
