How effective is undervolting?

How effective is undervolting? I'm considering getting 980M SLI instead of only one 980M in my new laptop but I'm worried about the heat that they will produce. Should I bother undervolting or try a different method to keep my laptop cool? I've never tried undervolting before so I'm wondering if I should bother to try it.

I'm trying to decide between one of Sager's 17.3 inch models with a disk drive, probably the NP9377, or MSI's GT80.

Could you be more specific? How would you find out if the laptop is (or isn't) made for a 980 or 980 SLI?

It comes with 2 x 980m's in it. Or you check with the manufacturer to see if it can take two cards.
