How important is the Sims card for th Samsong 9.7" tablet

I sent my tablet in to a shop for repair. they called and said that they could not repair it. when I received it back the Sims slot is vacant, no card. should this device have a card?

It's crucial if you want to make telephone calls from the tablet.

Otherwise it doesn't have to be there but if you had one and it's been removed, ask for it back because it have some credit or money on it.
