How to activate a sims card for att with no phone

I want to start textin so a friend of mine gave me a sims card that she got with a phone she bought awhile back but didn't use, its brand new. Can I activate that sims card without a permanent phone or can I activate it using her old phone and use the phone and card for the weekend and then when I leave take the sims card out and take it home with me and put it in an old phone of mine and use it? I tried to activate the sims card but it keeps asking for that IMEI number...since I'm not keeping her phone I don't know if I should use the number off her old phone just to activate the sims card or if that would mess up her chances of using that phone in the future cause It would have been activated with my info and that IMEI number would have already been used when I activated the phone?
