Step 1: Gather your cleaning materials. Prior to beginning to clean your DSLR camera lens, get your dust blower, lens cloth or tissue, and lens cleaning solution. Have all of your materials ready along with a clean area in which to complete the process.

Step 2: Remove dust from the lens. Use your blower to blow off any dust that has accumulated on the lens. Do not use compressed air or touch the lens with your bare fingers.

Step 3: Prep your cleaning cloth. Whether you are using a lens cloth or lens tissue, place a few drops of lens cleaning fluid on it. Do not place the fluid directly on the lens as it can damage it.

Step 4: Wipe the lens carefully. Wipe away any fingerprints or smudges that you see on the lens. The cloth and the cleaning fluid should not leave any streaks. Make sure the lens is dry before you are done.

Step 5: Check the camera. Attach the lens back to the camera and take a picture, preferably of a white surface with a low aperture. Look at the picture and see if you can find any visible marks or smudges. If so, repeat Steps 2 through 4. When the picture is clear, the lens is clean.

The proper cleaning of the lenses for your DSLR will ensure better quality photos and a greater lifespan for your photography equipment. Once the lens is clean you can use your camera or put it away and store it safely for future use.
