How to connect home theater system to PC?

I have a pretty old Sony 5.1 home theater system. I believe its model is DAV-FC9. I was wondering if there was anyway to connect the five speakers and subwoofer to a PC? PC was built and has a MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition motherboard (if that helps?). Is there anyway to connect the speakers directly to the PC and bypass the DVD player? I don't need surround sound (although this is preferable), only stereo sound working is fine. The monitor is a cheap yamasaki (?) and has a port that is labelled "audio in" on the back. The speakers connect to the DVD player with these plastic connector tip things (not sure what's it called so can't google the name) and doesn't match any port on the computer. Any help would be much appreciated.

Solution
If you add a soundcard with optical audio out you can connect that to the Sony digital audio input.
If you don't want to use the Sony receiver you would need a 5 channel amp for surround sound. For stereo you need an 2 channel amplifier. The sub should work if connected to the sub out of the PC since it is self powered. You can cut the connectors off the speaker wire and use bare wire for connection to an amp. The manual of the Sony details the wires
