how to connect

i am looking at getting some KRK RP5 G2 SE Rokit 5s and was wondering if connecting them is as simple as getting a rca or xlr to 3.5mm cable and plugging them in like a normal set of speakers i do not have a sound card but have onboard sound on my mobo msi big bang z77 also what would be the advantages of getting a sound card for sound quality?

If connecting them directly to the PC, yes, RCA to 3.5mm.

Yes it is that simple .
You will need a 3.5 mm to two RCA cable.(3.5 3 pole stereo jack to left and right RCA),this will be cheaper and easier to find than going the xlr route.
I would try it with your integrated sound first .
Some high end sound cards will give better audio quality but the integrated sound is generally pretty good nowadays.

cheers for the response was wondering if you would recommend any cables i was looking at this particular cable Cable Mountain 1.5m Ultimate Gold Plated 3.5mm Stereo Jack to 2x RCA Phono Plug but i have noticed that the two rca connections have quite a short amount of cable and as i am planning on having my krks either side of my monitor i'm assuming you would need a extension cable and this seems to be the same for quite a few cables.
