I just got this new laptop, but I want to find out what's the best geforce gt 540m optimal playable settings [OPS]. Any advice? Thanks.

Solution
It shouldn't slow down our game.
I don't think you need fraps, your not benchmarking. As long as the gameplay is smooth for you without stuttering/freezing or artifacts.

Optimal FPS will vary from person to person. Usually RPGs/RTS can be playable at 30+ whereas shooters would optimally played at 50+fps.
For games? Hard to say, just play around with setting until you think you have the best appearance to performance.

That's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure. Thanks.

Btw, how can I tell the optimal FPS for a particular game? I have read somewhere it should be 30+ FPS, but I don't know by just looking at the game if it is running at or about 30 FPS or higher FPS.

Use fraps:

http://www.fraps.com/

or you can use a command line (like in crysis) or a combination of keys pressed together to show frame rate (like in fsx). Depends on the game

I do have fraps in my old laptop, but wouldn't fraps slow down the game?

I hardly play shooters other than ME1 & 2 if you can call that a shooter. I usually play mostly RPG. Thanks.
