You give the number to the cops, check the local pawn shops and classifieds like craigslist.

Agreed. If you have the serial number of the device. Add it to the police report. You may also need to provide some evidence that you actually owned that particular device (receipt/registration info). Then, as BigNastyID states, start canvasing local pawn shops, ebay, and craigslist to see if you can locate it.
