Worked for me (S Focus), but I did briefly disconnect after clicking updated and then 2 seconds later reconnected my ethernet cable. only took me a few times trying this and worked. thanks!

I want to do this but I'm kinda afraid to do it. What's the difference in waiting for the service provider (In my case Claro P.R.) to update the phone and doing it this way? This is my first smartphone and I'm kind of afraid I'll be left without service If I update my phone "unofficially". Also, my phone is the LG E900 Optimus 7.

I can't imagine this is an oversight, it must be intentional, by allowing people to think they have got a sneak-peak will build the desire and the hype.
Great marketing tactic if it is true.

[citation][nom]markhd7[/nom]It is working for me and my HD7. I think it might be a little unclear in the article. Basically, you disconnect your internet when as soon as you click "update" in the settings section, so your internet disconnects while it says it is checking for updates. Keep the internet disconnected. Eventually, it will just say their is an update available despite the fact you aren't connected to the internet. Then re-connect, and hit the update button.[/citation]
Awesome!!! And thank you 'Toms'. Like another poster said, us readers dont mind the occasional tweak tip ;-) Keep them coming.

*Edit not work :-(

You might want to reboot the phone before you start... Also if it gets stuck on Step 6 'Restarting the phone', just press the power button on the phone a few times.

Have fun!

Didn't work for me 🙁 I have a HTC Mozart, tried disconnecting as soon as I hit the update button and waited but keeps saying my phone is up to date. current software version (7392)

Carriers ALWAYS delay these updates. They'd MUCH MUCH MUCH rather you bought a new phone from them (and extend your expensive contract period) than to get a free update that essentially makes you phone new and up-to-date again.
Just look at how long the carriers took before letting the original Galaxy S run Froyo.

As far as stability goes, it IS the exact same update you'd be getting from your carrier, just significantly earlier.

First off forget the going to phone settings matters none. Second use a laptop. It is easier to hit a button and shut off wifi. Third easiest way to do it connect your phone to laptop. Make sure ya have the latest update for zune 4.7 installed. Now click on settings. Then click on phone. Then as you click on update shut your wifi off. And as long as you do it the same time. The update will appear. Others said it takes 30 seconds but for mine was instantly. I tried the other way phone settings update forever it did not work. So once again worry about zune on pc not your phone settings. Hope that helps. Take care Ray

Worked for me too...took about ten tries for the first update, two for the second, and the final one occurred automatically, Great catch, Tom's!

Worked for my (Sprint) HTC Arrive (formerly HTC 7 Pro) exactly as described. Beautiful!

Hopefully Microsoft will learn from this and standardize their update procedure, much like Apple does. In fact, Microsoft should be an expert in this field.
