How to go from 44 pin IDE to 40 pin IDE

I need to use a 40 pin Desktop IDE HDD with a Laptop that uses a 44 pin IDE connector set up. I am looking for a cable that will do this conversion and have a least a few inches of length on it so I can get it assembled easilier.


Does anyone know of anything like this?

Im assuming the proper orientation to do what I need is 44 pin male and 40 pin female.

I also have a seperate stand alone power supply for the desktop hard drives so thats not a worry. I have found some that do female to female. I will look for another option.


So my searches aren't getting me anywhere anymore so was just wondering if anyone else might have a good idea from past experience. Also the laptop has a recessed HDD slot. Its embedded into the case, so the connector part is not easily accessible.

Opposite is pretty common, not sure the need for the other way has ever come up for me.

Thanks for the thought I forgot to mention I don't believe USB can work. I have the USB adapter cables but I have heard this program I am trying to use XboxHDM will not work with anything other than primary HDD connections. It did not recognize it when I used the cable. I am booting this program as the OS off the USB port.

Will a hard drive to USB connect work as an adapter if the usb end is not plugged in. Will both the 44 & 40 pin IDE connector areas be hot as long as power is given on one end? Im thinking about just extending my the laptop HDD connector and then using one of the USB cables as pictured to connect the extension cable to the hard drive. I have an external power source for the 3.5 HDD.

If you can find a 44-pin cable those last two might work. You would have a 40-pin cable to your 3.5" drive. You would need to provide 5 and 12 volts to the connector there, and the 44-pin cable going to your 2.5" laptop bay.

The USB adapter one is probably not internally configured to properly act as a pass through cable. Most likely some sort of communication bus bridge chip in there. And I imagine that without power from the USB the chip won't turn on. And even if you bypassed it to give it power, it would probably only let one port turn on at time.

I see, well i appreciate the help ive been searching like a dog for the past week and a half I think I made some progress today finally. Ebay was the cheapest of the bunch, Amazon and google didn't do much justice. I just ordered one of these.

I bought a Hard Drive USB cable kit earilier and it came with a molex power unit. Its cheap china stuff, but on the back says 12v --- 2A
5v ---2A

hopefully it works out. Thanks again for the pointers, saving me some money before I buy the wrong things again lol
