How to have headphones on a HDMI monitor setup?

I have recently decided to connect my laptop to a monitor. All was well until I decided to connect my headset. I soon found that all audio was being blasted by the monitor. Would like some help on this issue. Thanks in advance!

Connect your headset directly to the laptop, tben from Audio proprties select them as default playback device.
