How to Limit Ad Tracking on Your iOS 7 Device (or Higher)

These days, it seems that every company wants to track your online or mobile device activity so that they can better target you with advertisements. Technically, this process is fully legal and won’t do you any harm. However, if you don’t like the idea of being tracked in any capacity, you can easily use security settings provided by Apple to combat those pesky advertising spies. The instructions provided below explain how to limit ad tracking on your Apple mobile device as long as your operating system is iOS 7 or higher.

Step 1
Open the “Settings” menu on your device, and navigate to the “Privacy” tab. You should see a whole slew of privacy options, including menus for Location Services, Bluetooth Sharing, and more.

Step 2
Scroll all the way to the bottom of the Privacy page and select the menu tab that says “Advertising.” At the top of the page, you should see an option to “Limit Ad Tracking.” Tap the toggle switch to turn the function on. If the switch is green, then you already have the function enabled.

Step 3
Below the “Limit Ad Tracking” button, you should see a button to reset the advertising identifier for your device. Doing this will essentially reset your phone from square one as far as advertising is concerned, so apps will no longer serve you targeted ads. Tap the button to reset your identifier.

Recap
More and more app developers are using advertising identifiers in iOS devices to track their users and present them with targeted ads. Luckily for you, it’s easy to become a “ghost” to advertisers on iOS 7 or later. Just use the above steps to do so.
