How to password lock my samsung phone

I have an old Samsung flip phone and want to password lock it so only i can use it. I clicked on:

Settings
Security
Phone Lock (or Pin Lock)
On

then it wants me to enter a password. I assumed this meant to set the password, but i always get the message "Wrong password!"

So I seem to need to enter a password in order to change it to mine? What do I do about this?
