I dont know how to record tv shows, news etc on the dvd recorder.

How about providing a make and model for the "dvd recorder."

TVs don't have video outputs so you can't record "from" the TV.
Does the recorder have a built in ATSC tuner? Then split the antenna and connect it to both the TV and recorder.
If it doesn't have one built in then get an external ATSC tuner and connect your antenna and the DVD recorder to it. That will allow you to watch on channel and record another.
