how to stop acer aspire one netbook keep updating

My netbook keeps updating on shutdown and start up and takes ages to get on and off, can anyone help? Also its running very slow, ive just factory reset it and its still happening :-(

Are these Windows updates? If yes, what version of Windows are you using? This link - http/support.microsoft.com/kb/306525 - may help with turning off automatic updates in Windows XP and Windows 7.
