How to sync Android with Outlook

It used to be quite the challenge to get Outlook working with Android but ever since the Office refresh in 2015, the apps have begun playing nicely. Newer versions of the Outlook app sync with Android as soon as you open the app and connect. Syncing Android with Outlook is just as straightforward as Gmail now supports Exchange accounts while Outlook now supports Gmail.

Configure Outlook to sync with your Gmail account
1. Download or open Outlook and log in.
2. Tap the gear icon in the top right and select Add account.
3. Select Add an email account, enter your Gmail credentials and confirm.
4. Your Gmail account should now appear as an option alongside your Outlook account.

Configure Gmail to sync with Outlook
1. Open the Gmail app on your Android device and select the three menu lines in the top left of the screen.
2. Navigate to Settings, Add account and select Personal IMAP/POP.
3. Enter your Outlook account details and confirm.
4. Your Outlook account should now appear as an option to view alongside your Gmail account.

I kept getting errors within the Outlook app that prevented it working. Here’s how to fix it.

Stop the ‘unfortunately outlook has stopped’ message in Android

Occasionally you might see an error when starting Outlook that says ‘unfortunately outlook has stopped’. This is apparently to do with the latest version of Google Webview which has compatibility issues with Outlook.

To address this:
1. Navigate to Settings and Google Play Store.
2. Tap the three lines menu top left and select My apps and games.
3. Select Google Webview and uninstall.
4. Outlook should now work.
