how to use a hdmi splitter with ps3 and surround sound all with 1 hdmi port

Hi I have a LG tv with a samsung surround sound and a ps3 I'm trying to get all of them linked. Eg playing ps3 in hd with the surround sound via a hdmi splitter but doesn't seem to work. Just says no connection. Could the splitter be faulty. Each device has only one port.
Please help

The easiest way is going from the PS3 > HDMI > LG TV, and then LG TV > OPTICAL CABLE > Samsung Surround Sound.

Or use the optical on the ps3 to the surround sound. Easier than a splitter
