HP laptop does not connect to the Samsung TV using a HDMI?

I am a basic user and thought I could connect my HP laptop to the Samsung TV using a HDMI cable, help.....

1. What do you mean you cannot connect your laptop to the TV? Does the cable not fit? Does it plug in but not show anything? etc...
2. Have you tried other TVs?
3. Have you tried other laptops?
