HP laptop-wiped clean

I wiped out the computer and have a clear screen when turned on. It will cost approx $200 to get the recovery CD's from HP. It is an old model but is there any way to make this a working laptop again, or is it just good for parts now?

By wiped out do you mean removed the operating system?
