HP Pavlion: Bad Battery?

I have an HP Pavilion dv3 notebook. The status icon indicates I have a full charge on the battery; when I try to use the laptop on battery, only, the lights go out precipitously?!

Yeah that is an indication of a bad battery. Have you left the laptop, with the battery hooked up, connected to the wall outlet for long periods of time? if so then it's one way of damaging your battery. It's advised to discharge the battery by draining a fully charged battery down to 10% before connecting the laptop a wall outlet to charge back up to 100%.

Once fully charged, always discharge to 10% before recharging.
