HP vs Lenovo laptop?

HP laptop or Lenovo?
I am looking to buy a laptop and don't have a lot of knowledge on them. I plan to use the laptop for college schoolwork, pictures, maybe some videos, music and Internet browsing. Maybe play the Sims here and there. I also really want a touchscreen and something that has a cd and DVD drive. I need something that will last me at least a couple years if not longer. I found a couple laptops but I'm just not sure which is a better choice...

the only thing that really scares me about the Lenovo is some of the reviews say that the screen is very fragile and it seems cheaply made. But they both have their good and bad reviews.

Can someone help me decide which is the better choice and why? Or is there an even better option I just haven't found yet? Not wanting to spend much over $500 which is still pushing the budget.

The HP is the better one. It has more RAM (6 vs 4 GB), and the larger HD (1 TB vs 750 GB). More importantly, it has the Intel processor, which I prefer for mobile CPU's.

The Core i3-5005u is a 5th generation CPU vs the 4th generation Core i3-4005u (1.9GHz) and provides slightly more performance. The newer Intel HD 5500 is a little more powerful than the previous generation Intel HD 4400 so it will provide a little better gaming experience... if you are into playing games. But keep in mind that integrated graphics are weaker compared to low end dedicated graphics. Still possible to play some games that are not graphically demanding though like LoL with decent performance. 5th gen Intel CPUs also consume a little less power which means better battery life.

As a Lenovo enthusiast, I'm of course biased to begin with, but even with the Intel i3 and HD Graphics 4400, the HP falls short in the end:

The Lenovo has 8 GB RAM and a 1 TB HDD vs 6 GB and 750 GB for the HP. Both have the same battery time and weight.

Both have touch screens, and despite what you may have heard about Lenovo's screens, I believe it applies to all laptops in this price segment (with the possible exception of Dell). Both will serve you well in your stated tasks, and neither is an actual gaming machine - although I have to cede a slight advantage for the HP/Intel combination.

What makes me recommend the Lenovo is the conspicuously novel design which I'm sure you're going to appreciate, whether in classrooms or in cafés - even when considering the $100 price gap. The HP just seems a bit bland in my opinion.

But, please spend a few more hours comparing the laptops in this price segment.

In terms of overall performance, the quad core AMD A8-6410 APU is almost equal to a Core i3 CPU, but only when all 4 cores are being used. When only two cores are used a Core i3 is provides much better performance. Most programs and apps that average people use on a daily basis do not use 4 cores. The Sims 3 and 4 do not use 4 cores either.

As for integrated graphics performance, AMD's Radeon R5 (Beema) graphics core is about equal to the Intel HD 4200. That means it provides less performance than the Intel HD 4400 which in turn provides less performance than the Intel HD 5500.


Overall, the Acer laptop offers the best overall performance and it is also the least expensive laptop. It is currently on sale for $360, but there is no indication as to when that sale will end.

The Lenovo you are giving the specs for exceed his budget of $500, as Amazon is listing it as $547. The Lenovo that fits within the budget has the A6 processor, not the A8 one, and is $463. The lower priced Lenovo has lesser specs.

PS: I have a Lenovo laptop, use it almost daily, and am quite satisfied with it.
