hp zd7140 fan noise

greetings!

anyone have any experience in keeping this machine quiet? the fans are
fairly loud and never stop. i realize with a P4, there is likely to be at
least one fan on all the time, but is there any other solution? a quieter,
3rd-party fan, perhaps?

Power management settings: apply the battery settings to normal ops so
that CPU throttling is applied. Most of the time you can't tell the
difference in performance with most P4's. If it is not obvious that the
CPU is being throttled, download a copy of SpeedswitchXP, or HMonitor.
Both have customizable settings for the throttling level; HMonitor
reports the CPU and HD temps and will throttle on temperature,and also
reports fan speed (if your laptop has the sensor, most don't). Note
that these will only reduce fan noise at the limits you set; the P4 must
be cooled constantly so shutting down the fan is not an option. The GPU
fan is controlled from the video and there is no way to handle it AFIK
(if there is a separate GPU fan).

If you have Windows Indexing service running (speeding up the still lousy
search function) it will use periods of inactivity to search and index
your hard disk and heat up your processor, causing the fan on some laptops
to run almost all the time. Stop the indexing service, (and, totally
unrelated, download Google Search) and see if that helps.

You also could try to speed down your fans with a utility like Speedfan.
