i cant connect my computer to my tv

i have a desktop and when i try to connect it to the tv with hdmi it says no signal i have windows 8
radeon 7970
MSI Z87-G41 PC Mate Intel Z87 Chipset DDR3 ATX Mainboard

update i got it to work somewhat i have it hooked up to the motherboard and i tried the graphics card it doesnt work and there is no option saying i have another monitor up just one

what resolution are you trying to export at? many televisions will display "no signal" when they receive an incompatible resolution feed. also try turning the tv on and off to make sure its not just the hdmi handshake issue. are you sure you are on the right input? flip through them just to be sure. go to device manager and look under monitors. does it show up there just not in display properties? have you tried using a different connection point?
