i cant get sound to work on my pc

i bought a custom pc off craigslist the other day ( yes i know that was my first problem ) and i havent been able to get my sound to work on it execpt when i plug it into my tv with an hdmi cord but since my monitor wont take an hdmi i have to use a dvi cord and since i cant get sound through a dvi cord i figured i could try and get it through a 3.5 jack but that dident even work and when i go to my playback devices it says that the nvedia hdmi outut is disconected and that is that is the only option for me to choose ( yes i have it to where it will show both hidden and disabled devices)

Are all the drivers installed? Motherboard drivers? They usually include Realtek HD Audio.

i dont have any realtek drives on here and everything that i know of is up to date, i may just go to each driver and check to see if there is an update

found the problem, i went into my bios and the guy who had it before me disabled the azalia codec for some reason but it works perfectly now
