Need manufacturer and model numbers for both the HDTV and the laptop as well as what Inputs/Outputs you're using.

Assuming you connected with HDMI you should set that as a 2nd display not a mirror of the laptop display. Then you will need to adjust the picture from the video driver control to match the resolution of your TV. Sometimes there is even a control to adjust the size.
