You would connect audio receiver with the device that supplies the source audio and video, such as game console, cable/satellite box, etc.

We know modern TV have HDMI+Optical. So if your receiver don't have either you will want a Toslink (optical) to RCA (analog) converter. Of course you will get stereo only, no surround.
