I have a Samsung stereo and a lg tv i put the red and white wires on the back of both and hit auxiliary but i get nothing

Try connecting something else to the stereo via the same input and see if it is working.

Also, try a different set of cables known to be good.

Are you sure your LG TV has analog audio output? You may be connected to an audio input. Would need the model number to be sure but many TVs only have optical audio output. If yours does then you would need one of these:

to convert to analog audio.
