Need help to use an exterior monitor with my laptop

I tried the f👎 + f8 solution - the laptop was on and both monitors were functioning. When I pressed both of the keys, the exterior monitor went dark. I tried pressing them again - still dark. I turned the laptop off and re-started but the exterior monitor is still dark. It seems that the laptop doesn't recognize the exterior monitor anymore Or the monitor doesn't recognize the laptop.
