i tried contacting the dell customer, but even they were not able to solve this issue. They gave me a replacement but it has the same issue. Now I am fed up of wasting my time and energy talking to dell customer service..plz help..

If your external speakers/headphones aren't working, try the following...

1. Go to "Control Panel".
2. Click on "Sound".
3. Make sure you are on the "Playback" tab.
4. Click on the device you are trying to fix.
5. Now click the "Configure" button and follow the prompts. (Be sure you also click the "Test" button.)
6. Once that is complete, click the "Properties" button.
7. When you are done with your changes, in "Properties", click "Apply" and then "OK".
8. Then click "OK", again, on the main "Sound window".

NOTE: If you don't see the headphones listed, try right clicking on the empty space in that window and make sure that "Show disabled devices" and "Show disconnected devices" are both checked.

I do have the same problem and your detailed solution does not help. Even if I try configuring the output device (which is listed as "speaker/headphones") the sound comes through the speakers. However the sound is 50% lower than without the plugged in headphones. I noticed that this happens only after the notebook has in hibernate mode.

I had the same issue on my new dell 13 5000. I spent 1:10 min on the phone with dell support and in the end driver updates for the audio and chip set drivers did the trick. they should have tried this a lot sooner.

If nothing else helped, you could check if you disabled MaxxAudioPro on startup.
Almost no one mentioned this problem, as most of the times other solutions work, but this was the reason it didn't work for me. If it is the problem, just enable it and your headphones will be detected.
