With all you say in the description of yourself as a techie, WTH was you thinking? one word MONITOR, I've used the Steam deck as a backup primary pc, as a OBS streaming device even used it to stream a live cooking show I was doing, the steam dock has both a displayport and a HDMI port, all you do is grab your old 1080p 27" and actually use it in desktop mode :D

My setup was:
Logitech MX mouse
Logitech K380 keyboard
8bit gamepad.
Old Iiyama 27" monitor, use the SD internal screen for obs, discord and stream chat and the big window for games.

Damn if this is the quality of writers at Toms maybe I should sign up, granted I've been gaming since 1976 but come on please if you are going to write a piece at least put some common sense into it.

For anyone arriving here wondering what the Steam Deck looks like running the desktop in a somewhat more normal setup with an external monitor and using the Deck as a secondary monitor:
