I want to build my own laptop.

Anyone know any websites that sell laptop shells that you can build components into yourself? i have been looking but cant seem ot find a website that will sell just a shell.

You haven't, because you can't build a laptop like that.
Everything is designed around everything else. There is no generic 'laptop' like there is with desktop cases.

You can't build a laptop, just upgrade the ram and hard drive. If you really want to build a computer, build a desktop which is much better value than a laptop anyway .

good to know, i figured that they built the case around specific motherboards, but isn't that a great way to suck money out of people!

It's not sucking money, it just the tradeoff you accept when you buy a laptop.
Portability vs performance/price/power.

And it's not just the motherboard. Ports on the side, power button, screen and hinges, cooling system, etc, etc, etc. All unique.

I have 3 laptops sitting here. HP, Toshiba, Sony. All pretty much the same size. Zero swappable parts, aside from the generic 2.5" hard drive, and maybe RAM.

If you want to build a computer then you'd better go for a Desktop, since you cannot build a laptop... Only in SOME laptops (not all) you can change some parts.
